Openmoko Introduction

(taken from openmoko wiki site)

Openmoko was a project to create mobile phones with an open software stack. As of today, listed on its website, it states "Openmoko is not a technology company. And it's not a brand. It's the story of a small group's journey through technology, art, and culture. Along the way, we create products that reflect the evolving perspective of our values and the experiences we share together. We formed a company because we want to share this perspective with you."

Why we love the Openmoko concept and where does it go from here

As of today, although Openmoko does not build phones such as the Freerunner anymore, the project has, however, triggered off various embedded-based open source movements and some of the children/fork/parallel of these projects are still ongoing and note that they do have different levels of 'openness'. Some of them are listed here and mostly already have twitter feeds and blogs to follow.

Our concept is still the same. We would love to help our customers achieve short time-to-market for their development projects by helping to customise their solutions based on the open hardware/software concept. With more open projects around, our customers benefit from it and the community benefits from it.

Some of our customers might not have the luxury of building an embedded device (in small quantities) from scratch. They, for example, might require an embedded device that is mobile-capable and requires data acquisition capabilities and a small display. We can then build a rapid prototype using an open reference design and an external data acquisition module for them in a shorter time and lower cost than usual.
